WhatsApp for a Free Counselling Read Your Questions AnsweredThe best TEF coaching is the one that trains you on all four exam skills, gives you timed mock tests, corrects your speaking and writing in detail, and links every practice session to the CLB level you need. Chaitanya French Academy offers exactly that through live online batches. Learners in Toronto can join from home, and they do not have to commute through winter traffic to a classroom.
Honest note: our classroom is in Karnal, India, and we teach Toronto-based learners online. We do not run a physical centre in Toronto, and we would rather say so upfront than leave you guessing.
Canada recognises French as one of its two official languages. Because of this, a strong French result can lift your Express Entry profile in two ways: it adds language points, and it may also qualify you for French-language bonus points or category-based draws.
TEF Canada, short for Test d'évaluation de français, is one of the French tests accepted by IRCC for immigration. Your four results are converted into the Canadian Language Benchmark scale (called NCLC in French), and IRCC reads each ability on its own. That detail matters a great deal. A brilliant speaking score will not rescue a weak listening score, since the lowest ability often decides which level you can claim.
| Ability | TEF Canada score range for NCLC 7 |
|---|---|
| Listening (compréhension orale) | 249 – 279 |
| Reading (compréhension écrite) | 207 – 232 |
| Writing (expression écrite) | 310 – 348 |
| Speaking (expression orale) | 310 – 348 |
These ranges follow IRCC's published equivalency table as reported at the time of writing. TEF Canada changed its scale in December 2023, so IRCC keeps more than one conversion table. Always check the table that matches your test date on canada.ca, and speak to a licensed immigration consultant before you finalise your Express Entry strategy. We teach French; we do not give immigration advice.
You cannot prepare well for a test you do not understand. So, before any grammar drill, we walk you through how each section works and where candidates usually lose marks.
| Section | Approx. time | What it tests | Where candidates slip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 40 min | Short and long audio, announcements, conversations | Audio plays once, so a missed word becomes a missed answer |
| Reading | 60 min | Ads, articles, formal texts, multiple-choice questions | Reading every line instead of hunting for the key idea |
| Writing | 60 min | One continuation task and one opinion task | Weak structure, linking words missing, running out of time |
| Speaking | 15 min | Obtaining information, then convincing someone | Freezing, short answers, or memorised scripts that sound flat |
Timings are approximate and can be updated by the test provider. Please confirm the current format on the official TEF Canada website before you book your slot.
Almost every institute online claims to be the best. Instead of asking you to trust a slogan, here are six things worth checking before you pay any fee, wherever you decide to study.
General French classes build a base, but TEF has its own task types and timing. Good coaching teaches the format, not just the language.
Either you work on all four skills equally or you risk one weak ability dragging down your CLB. Look for a plan that treats each skill separately.
Timed papers show you how you perform under pressure, and corrected papers show you exactly what to fix next.
Listening and reading can be checked by an answer key. Speaking and writing need a human who explains why a sentence works or fails.
When the group is small, the trainer can hear you speak often, correct your pronunciation, and notice your repeating mistakes.
Whether you need NCLC 5, 7 or higher, the plan should start from that target and work backwards.
Chaitanya French Academy was built around these six points. We use CEFR-aligned levels, we keep batches small, and we link each practice task to a target CLB score.
The course follows a simple path. We start by understanding where you stand, and then we move through focused lessons, mock tests, and a final review.
We check your current French level, your target score, and the skill that worries you most. A learner who already speaks well but writes slowly needs a different plan from a learner who reads easily but panics in speaking.
Each session targets listening, speaking, reading or writing, so no area gets ignored. You learn note-taking for audio, answer planning for speaking, and paragraph structure for writing.
Practice papers are timed like the real exam. After each one, you receive feedback that shows how to raise your score steadily rather than randomly.
The last stage covers pacing, confidence, and test-day decisions, such as when to skip a hard question and how to manage your 15 minutes of speaking.
Many Toronto applicants work full-time, study part-time, or look after family. A fixed classroom schedule rarely fits that kind of week.
Our classes run live on Zoom. After you enrol, our team shares your schedule and meeting link, and you can attend from your laptop at home. India is roughly 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead of Toronto, depending on daylight saving time, and our academy operates from early morning to late night India time every day of the week. Because of that wide window, evening and weekend slots in Toronto are often possible. Message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you what is available before you commit.
No commute, no parking, and no missed class because of snow.
You can ask questions in the moment, and the trainer can correct your pronunciation straight away.
Tell us your free hours, and we will suggest the closest batch or a custom arrangement.
If you are a complete beginner, neither a two-week crash course nor a pile of mock tests will carry you to NCLC 7. In that case, we usually suggest building your A1 to B1 base first through our general French programs, and then moving to TEF-specific preparation. No coaching centre can promise a particular score, and we do not either. What we can promise is structured practice, clear feedback, and an honest view of your progress.
"I joined the TEF preparation program for Canada immigration. Section-wise practice for listening and speaking, plus regular feedback, kept me on track for my target CLB level."

Not sure where to start? Many TEF candidates build their base first and then move into exam training. These pages may help you decide.
The best choice is the class that covers all four skills, uses timed mock tests, and gives detailed speaking and writing feedback. Chaitanya French Academy offers live online TEF Canada coaching with small batches and section-wise training for Toronto-based applicants. We teach from India over Zoom, so there is no physical centre in Toronto.
TEF Canada is a French proficiency test that includes listening, reading, writing and speaking. IRCC accepts it as proof of French for immigration, and your results are converted into NCLC levels. Please check IRCC's website for the current list of accepted tests and rules.
It depends on your program. For NCLC 7, you need roughly 249–279 in listening, 207–232 in reading, and 310–348 in both speaking and writing. Other programs ask for lower or higher levels, so confirm the exact requirement for your stream on canada.ca.
Yes. Classes are live on Zoom, and you only need a laptop, a stable internet connection and a quiet space. After enrolment, our team shares your schedule and meeting link. Ask us on WhatsApp about slots that suit Toronto time.
There is no single answer, because it depends on your starting level and target score. A learner at B1 who needs NCLC 7 needs a different timeline from a beginner. We begin with an assessment and then suggest a realistic plan instead of quoting a fixed number of weeks.
Yes. Timed mock tasks are part of the program, and each one is followed by correction and feedback. This helps you build speed, spot weak areas, and feel calmer on the real test day.
Both are accepted by IRCC, and neither is "easier" for everyone. The better one is usually the test whose format suits you and whose nearest test centre and dates fit your timeline. We prepare learners for both, and we can help you compare the two before you decide.
The TEF course works best if you already know basic French. If you are starting from zero, we recommend building A1 to B1 first through our general French courses, and then moving to exam-focused training. This path takes longer, but it protects your score.
We keep batches small so that the trainer can give regular speaking practice, pronunciation correction and progress tracking. Ask our team for current batch details when you enquire.
